Fish Farming – Food Safety

Hi! This is Mike Ogallo speaking.

I wish to bring to your kind attention a fish farming project on Rusinga Island, Kenya.

It is a community project born from a true necessity and it comes with a spirit of local collaboration and partnership.

Let me briefly present what we have created and where we want to go from here.

WHY A FISH FARM ON THE BIG VICTORIA LAKE?

Well, due to widespread use of harmful fishing strategies on our Lake Victoria, we have faced a big challenge on fish supply for our communities.

Fish has been and remains our major source of protein and nutrients and the population here in Rusinga Island is growing.  So what could we do?

We came up with the vision of a fish farm, in the guise of the Dechwa community project.

It has been established to meet the demand for tilapia fish, when natural fish resources remain depleted and do not suffice to fill local demand.

Since February 2022 we have been doing some good and hard work and can present some good results.

We built up seven fish ponds, as you can see in our pictures. Within each pond we are able to produce about 2000 fish a year.

We truly have been motivated with the results.  We have shown our ability to carry through with our plan and the fish farm is operating well.

By the end of 2022 we hope to turn a profit from our project, while at the same time being able to provide our community with healthy fish for their consumption.

We can a accommodate one more pond in the space at our disposal. This will increase our fish production to a total of 16.000 fish a year.

We will be able to harvest fish throughout the year, at different harvest times, providing a continuous supply for the community.

As demand for fish in the community is growing geometrically, the tilapia fish breeding industry is a lucrative business opportunity.

At the same time it is an environmentally responsible strategy and it offers health benefits for the population of Rusinga island.

As the concept developer and coordinator I, Mike Ogallo, will be glad to answer any remaining questions, if you wish to connect and become part of this community project.

Please connect with me if you wish to send a financial contribution, we would appreciate it very much and I will provide you with a payment possibility.
